The Eight Anchor Attributes

Eight Skills. Four Quads.
One Arc of Growth.

The Anchor Attributes derive from Harvard's Making Caring
Common research — eight durable skills organized as one
continuous cycle, each mapped to the CASEL® framework
and measured through authentic student voice.

Competencies At The Core
Of The Impacter Cycle

Every attribute lives in one of our 4 quads, and every quad carries a CASEL® connection. Select any attribute to see its definition, and the linguistic signal our machine learning models listen for.

The Impacter Cycle

Why The Wheel Turns In This Order

The quads are not a menu, they are a sequence. Growth starts with the drive to understand, moves through pursuit and perseverance, and closes with care and recognition before the cycle begins again.

Quad 1

Curiosity + Perspective-Taking

CASEL®: Awareness

The drive to know and understand the world, yourself, and others.

Quad 2

Purpose + Self-Control

CASEL®: Self-Management

The development and pursuit of your Quad 1 goals, during which you overcome obstacles and help others do the same.

Quad 3

Grit + Growth Mindset

CASEL®: Responsible Decision-Making

The qualities and skills needed to persevere despite those struggles you or others face during Quad 2.

Quad 4

Compassion + Gratitude

CASEL®: Relationship Skills

The care and recognition we offer ourselves and others throughout and after the current cycle ends.

Each Skill Leaves A Signature In Language

Our rubric-aligned machine learning models don't score vocabulary or polish. They recognize the observable evidence of each attribute in authentic student language, and are trained on tens of thousands of educator-scored responses.

Student Reflection · Verbatim
"I felt overwhelmed at first, but taking small steps helped me see progress."

What the model hears: temporal linking ("at first… helped me"), a named emotional state, and a concrete coping strategy — observable evidence of Self-Control and Growth Mindset, scored against the same rubric trained educators use.

Each attribute has its own specialized scoring pipeline — thirteen in total across the Impacter 8 and the CASEL 5.
Rubrics specify observable markers — causal reasoning connectives, perspective integration, temporal linking — before the model sees any data.
The focus is the presence and quality of the attribute, never vocabulary level or sentence complexity — across 90+ languages.
